June 26, 1870, Nationaltheater, Munich

The Valkyries burst forth, fierce and relentless, onto the desolate and silent scene of the battlefield. Embodied by pristine, romantic, warrior virgins, at the command of Odin, dressed in golden robes and riding winged horses, they descend from the sky to transport the most glorious fallen heroes to " Valhalla ," the Hall of the Fallen, where they will continue their former heroic lives as " einherjar ," fighting alongside Odin in the battle that marks the end of the world: " Ragnarok ."

" Walkürenritt " or " Ritt der Walküren " is the popular name given to the introductory piece of Act III - Scene I, the last of " Die Walküre ": the first day of the tetralogy of " Der Ring des Nibelungen ", immediately after the prologue that is " Das Rheingold ". It is the most gigantic operatic epic that any composer has ever undertaken.

The premiere took place on 26 June 1870, at the insistence of Ludwig II of Bavaria, against Wagner's will, at the " Hofoper München ", now the " Königlichen Hof- und Nationaltheater München ", under the direction of Franz Wüllner. The premiere under the conditions Wagner wanted took place on 14 August 1876 with the opening of the " Bayreuther Festspiele ".

The illustration captures the graphics of the last eight bars before Gerhilde 's vocal intervention: " Hojotoho! Hojotoho! Heiaha! "; at which point all the instruments align under the same motif.
