December 26, 1831, La Scala, Milan

Vincenzo Bellini's opera Norma , a lyrical tragedy in two acts, is about to reveal its crowning moment: Casta diva.

An immortal aria, it stands as the very soul of the work. It is the jewel of this tragedy, where the purest lyricism and the most restrained emotion intertwine with superhuman elegance. The libretto, written in Italian by Felice Romani, encapsulates devotion, drama, and the sublime connection with the divine.

The scene takes place in "The Grove," in the first scene of the opening act. There, under a sky seemingly tinged with mystery, the priestess and seer Norma performs the ancient ritual. Giuditta Pasta, the first to embody this mythical figure, displays a performance that transcends the earthly, charged with alchemy and divinity. With ceremonial movements, she cuts a branch of sacred mistletoe, offering her tribute to the god Irminsul. The invocation resounds: "Pace v'intimo… E il sacro vischio io mieto."

Raising her arms to the sky, Norma invokes the Moon, its silvery light bathing the stage in a supernatural glow. Her prayer is profound, and those present prostrate themselves, captivated by the grandeur of this moment. The flute begins to whisper the first bars, caressing the listener's soul, while the oboe doubles the melody in its final moments, creating a fabric of sound that seems made of threads of moonlight.

And then, Norma's voice:

Casta Diva that inargenti
This ancient sacred plant,
We wanted the beautiful image
Without cloud and without sail.
